Arsenal go into the final day of the season with a chance of winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004. The Gunners have been largely outstanding this campaign, scoring more goals and amassing more wins than they have ever managed in a single Premier League history.
“Somebody told me it’s 27 wins in the Premier League,” Mikel Arteta said after last Sunday’s win over Manchester United ensured that the title race will go down to the final day. “That’s not progress, that’s history. That’s very difficult to do, especially in the league where we are playing now. Big compliment to all the players and staff for what they’ve done.”
Unfortunately for Arsenal, they have come up against Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are vying to become the first team in English football history to win four consecutive league titles and are currently on their longest unbeaten run in Premier League history having not lost a game since December 6th.
City will be the favourites heading into the final day after leapfrogging Arsenal with a win over Tottenham Hotspur in midweek. If they are able to beat West Ham they will be champions. Arsenal will be hoping for a miracle, and know they must win in their final game against Everton to capitalise on any City slip up.
If the improbable does happen then there will of course be a victory celebration. This would be the first league title the Emirates Stadium has seen since it opened in 2006. But with only one team able to lift the Premier League trophy, how will Martin Odegaard be able to hoist it aloft at full on Sunday?
