Manu Bhaker etched her name in historybooks on Tuesday (July 30) by becoming the first Indian female athlete to win two Olympic medals in a single edition. The 22-year-old Bhaker, who helped India open the medal account in Paris on Sunday (July 28) by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 10 m air pistol event, won a bronze medal in the 10 m air pistol mixed team on Tuesday. She teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to get the better of the South Korean pair of Wonho Lee and Ye Jin Oh by a margin of 16-10 in the bronze medal playoff match.

After becoming the first Indian female athlete and second overall to win multiple Olympic medals in a single edition, Manu expressed her happiness and said that she feels very proud of her performance. According to Bhaker, her hard work has paid off in Paris.

“I’m feeling really proud and there is lot of gratitude, thanks for all the blessings and love” said Bhaker after winning her’s as well as India’s second medal in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

Actually we can’t control (what the rivals will do), we can do what is in our hand, me and my partner thought let’s just try our best and we will keep fighting till the end. I really feel proud that I performed so well,” she added.

Bhaker is the fourth Indian after Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu to win two medals in the Olympics.

Pritchard was the first athlete to win two medals in the same Olympic Games for India. He achieved the feat during the 1900 Paris Olympics by winning silver medals in the 200-metre hurdles and 200-metre race, whereas Sushil and Sindhu finished on the podium in two different editions.

Sushil won a bronze medal for India in the wrestling event of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics, whereas ace shuttler Sindhu won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Games and settled for a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games.
