Sarah Matthews, a former press aide to Donald Trump, praised Kamala Harris for going “into the lion’s den” for her Wednesday interview on Fox News and said she believes it does make a difference.
“I think it’s really important that Kamala Harris went into the lion’s den, and she knew that this was going to be a tough interview, and it might not necessarily be fair,” Matthews told MSNBC on Wednesday.
She said it was a “really powerful moment” when Harris called out her interviewer, Fox News host Bret Baier, for using a misleading clip to whitewash Trump’s controversial comments describing “radical left lunatics” as “the enemy from within.”
“Bret, I’m sorry, and with all due respect, that clip was not what he has been saying about ‘the enemy within,’ that he has repeated when he is speaking about the American people. That’s not what you just showed,” Harris said during the interview.
Matthews suggested that the exchange presented Fox News viewers with facts and perspective they weren’t used to seeing.
“For those in the Fox News audience who are watching who might not have been familiar with these remarks, they might have saw her push back on this, and they might have thought to themselves, ‘What am I not being shown?’” she said. “And maybe they went home and Googled it, and maybe they saw the remarks for themselves and saw him double down on it.”
Matthews endorsed Harris earlier this week.
She said on MSNBC she’s never voted for a Democrat before and argued that, with weeks to go before the election, it’s important for disaffected Republicans “to see Republican voices out there saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ We need to turn the page on Donald Trump and to say, ‘Hey, it’s OK to put policy aside in this one election and cast a ballot for Kamala Harris.’”
