Nigerian cruiserweight boxer Efetobor Apochi has called for a rematch with Cheavon Clarke following a recent majority-decision loss to the British pugilist in an WBA Intercontinental title fight in California.
Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the “Nigerian Pitbull” expressed his disappointment with the outcome and challenged Clarke to a second encounter.
“This boy can’t beat me, no way,” Apochi wrote.”Underdog Apochi. Born in Warri and raised in Ughelli, nothing can change the outcome of my thoughts and feelings about myself. They’re already set in stone. Never truly been beaten. Let’s run it back—rematch.”
Apochi’s 10-round showdown with Clarke was part of the Pacheco-Sulecki undercard, with Clarke, now 10-0 (7 KOs), battling through a late assault by the Nigerian to secure the win.
Apochi, renowned for his knockout power, found moments of success, particularly in rounds seven and nine, where he landed heavy blows that shook Clarke, who survived the onslaught and secured a win with his resilience and tactical approach.
Despite Apochi’s relentless pressure in the final rounds, judges Ron Scott Stevens and Jonathan Davis scored the bout 98-92 and 97-93 in favour of Clarke, while Jerry Cantu scored it a draw at 95-95.
Prior to the bout, Apochi had confidently proclaimed himself “the most dangerous cruiserweight in the world” and vowed to knock out the undefeated Clarke. The Nigerian pugilist’s aggressive style and knockout power have made him a fan favourite, despite recent setbacks.
Clarke, dubbed “C4”, has continued his rise through the ranks since competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His victory marks his most significant win to date, and the Nigerian believes a second meeting would have a different outcome.
