No fewer than 12 people were reported dead on Tuesday while four others were injured in a lone crash which occurred at about 3:15 pm around Ogere along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The lone accident involved a White Mazda Bus with registration number DDA733XA.
The crash was adduced to wrongful overtaking after which the bus lost control, hit the road divider, somersaulted and burst into flame.
The Spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists on Tuesday.
The injured were said to have been taken to Patmag Hospital, Ogere for medical care.
The statement partly reads, “Rescue operation was carried out today, Tuesday, August 13, 2024, by a team from FRSC Ogere Unit Command on a crash that occurred at about 1514h
“The crash involved one vehicle with the following details;
White Mazda Bus with registration number DDA733XA. The total number of people was 16 which comprised 12 male adults, three female adults and one female child.
Four male passengers were injured in the crash and rescued while the other 12 persons were burnt to death.”
The statement noted that the “suspected cause of the lone crash was wrongful overtaking by the bus driver, which led to loss of control and the bus hitting the road divider in the middle of the road. The bus fell and was engulfed in flames immediately.”
Meanwhile, the State Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, said that he’s pained over the recklessness of some motorists on the highway, who refuse to obey traffic rules.
Fasakin urged motorists to maintain the stipulated speed on the highway and also ensure a clear road before overtaking. He further commiserated with the injured victims and wished them a quick recovery.
